Army Development Team - We have been invited to participate in the PSUK (Police) Orienteering Championships to be held in the Forest of Dean, near Coleford, Gloucestershire on Wed 21 Mar 2012, and we would like to enter the Army Development Team as guests. Details of the event can be found in this flyer. It would be good to enter at least 1 male and 1 female team in the Open events.
If you are available and would like to race please let know asap so that we have an idea of numbers and can confirm entries with the organiser.

Brecon 10 Peaks Challenge - Runner wanted - Richard Sharp of TVOC writes: I am taking part in the Brecon Challenge 2012 for the Mitchemp Trust on Saturday 17 March 2012. This is usually a walk around ten of the highest Brecon Beacon peaks over a distance of 35km and there will be a number of teams doing just that. However, that seems too easy so I am putting together a team to run the route. Due to a withdrawal, there is now a vacancy in the team so we are looking for a fourth member to run with us, with a target time of around five hours. In summary, the start/finish are at Storey Arms and it takes in Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Crybyn and Fan y Big to the east and then Fans Frynych, Dringarth, Llia and Fawr to the west. This is very similar to the area used for the KIMM in 1995.
If you are interested in joining us then please let me know. Further details are at www.mitchemptrust.org.uk or e-mail for the route, etc.
Alternatively, if you do not wish to run but would like to help our fundraising for the charity then please visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/runningteam

Results are now available from the MLN Event held at Warcop.

Annual Newport Macmillan Cancer Support January Jog 2012 - Ian Kevan, Ultrasport writes: As organiser of this event, it would be greatly appreciated if you would kindly look at our Just Giving Page we have set up at www.justgiving.com/januaryjog2012. Please help us to match, or even beat, the total of £5089.00 raised for the 2011 event.

MLS Events Civilian Entry Fees - The civilian MLS contribution is to increase by 50p from 1 January 2012 making the civilian entry fee £3.50 from this date. The increase is due to the revised BOF levy thresholds introduced in 2011 and the rise in BOF and SCOA levies due in 2012. The MLS events are now attracting many more civilians over and above the 65 levy-free ones and any event with over 121 senior civilians incurs a loss. Overall we are currently running a loss on civilian entries this season so we must raise the civilian fee to ensure we cover the BOF and Regional levies, and the cost of equipment replacement and running the league. The levy is also now covering the club entry fees which were suspended this year.

SCOA Event Safety Course - a BOF Accredited Event Safety Course will take place in Didcot on Saturday 11 February 2012. All event organisers of Level C events and above, and all controllers, will need to attend one of these courses in the near future (probably by the end of 2012). Spaces are limited and priority will be given to SCOA members. The course is free. Please see the flier for further details.

Club Success: BAOC won the SN Trophy, from SLOW and SO in 2nd and 3rd. 13 clubs were in the running (see Team Results List). The counting runners were: Dave Rollins, Colin Dickson, Dane Blomquist, Woo Allen and Elisabeth Dickson. Congratulations on a job well done.

Photos from the Inter-Corps Championships are now available on the Photos page. Anyone who would like a full resolution copy should contact .

BAOC OMM Success

Over the last weekend in October, Mark Bentley and Jamie Ranson competed in the OMM which this year took place in central Scotland. This prestigious event, the originator of the 2-day mountain marathon format, is a test of self-reliance in the wilds, carrying all equipment with no outside support, GPS or cell phone. Two-person teams are totally independent and just finishing is an achievement. Mark and Jamie finished 9th overall on the B Course in a time of 11 hours 25 minutes 15 seconds - the first military team on the course.

Picture shows Mark & Jamie towards the end of the first day (click on image for larger version).

POSTINGS AND PROMOTIONS: If you have been promoted or changed units, or you are new to the MLS League, please email with your details before your first league event. For those new to the Leagues, I need your Service No., Rank & Initial, Surname, Unit, M/F, DOB and Emit card number (if you own one or have one permanently allocated).

The following items are now available on the Documents page: MLS AGM Minutes (31 Aug), MLS Rules 2011-12, MLNI AGM Minutes (7 Sep).

Purple Pen Updated - this free course planning software has been updated in July and now contains some new features. See the list of changes and download the program from the Purple Pen website.

Event Officials' Page - A new page has been created to assist event officials (Organisers, Planners and Controllers) find the information they need to put on an event. League Rules (for MLS, MLN & BFG - others to follow), Equipment Lists and sample Risk Assessments are available on the page. There are also links to event-related software and other sources of information. The new page is accessed from the Event Org link in the menu. The page will be updated periodically with any other information thought useful.

BAOC Successes - Congratulations to Woo Allen on winning the W40 class at the British Mountain Bike Long Championships held at Longleat on 26 June. On a hot, dry, but humid day, and with the recent rain turning the previously hard tracks into a sticky, muddy test, Woo finished a clear 6 minutes in front of Sarah Francis (SN). Mel Slade finished in third place just 31 seconds behind Sarah. In the mens competition, Peter Simmonds claimed second place in the M40 class.

The Junior Inter-Regional Championships took place in the North West over the weekend of 2-3 July. The SCOA boys relay team of Peter Bray (SN), Dane Blomquist (BAOC) & Tim Morgan (SOC), finished second, after being 9th at the end of the second leg. Overall, SCOA finished 6th in this 2-day team competition. James Averill (BAOC) was also part of the SCOA team and this will be the last year he can compete in the JIRCS.

Pictures from the Army Team Champs are now available on the Photos Page (larger size versions now available).

Colin Dickson receives Silva Award for Services to Orienteering

It was announced at the British Orienteering AGM in April, that Colin Dickson was this year's recipient of the Silva Award for Orienteering Services. Dave Rollins, British Orienteering Team Manager, recently presented Colin Dickson with the Award in front of the attendees at a Personal Performance Coaching Weekend at Long Valley (organised by Colin & Dave).

The Award was set up in 1983 by Silva (Sweden) AB to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Silva® compass. In the UK the award is made to a person or persons who have made a very significant contribution to orienteering over a period of years, with an emphasis on ‘field' activities rather than committee work. The award recognises the countless hours put in by Colin over many years to organise and plan events as well as his promotion of the sport at RMAS and through the Skills & Planners courses at Longmoor. Without Colin's efforts, there would be a lot less orienteering taking place in the south.

The final total of the monies raised for the Royal British Legion at the recent Bordon event is £549.37. Thank you all for taking part and especially for those who donated their change and/or placed donations in the collection boxes at Registration and Tom's Burger Wagon.
Photos from the prize-giving are available here (opens in new window).

Results are now available from the 4 Div & MLS Prize-Giving Event held at Bordon. This event was a fund raiser for The Royal British Legion and raised over £517 for the charity from entry fees and donation of services for free from Babcock, Emit UK and Computer Operator Jerry Newcombe. Further comments are on the Results page and a final total raised will be published in the next few days.

Along the way they will visit or pass several locations linked with the military with the familiar red Ultrasport van supporting the cyclists. As well as Ian Kevan, the cyclists will include previous Ultrasport owner, Ken Broad and son Simon.
You can see their routes on the ridingwithgps.com site as follows: Day 1, Pt 1, Day 1, Pt 2, Day 2, Day 3.
Approximate timings are: Day 1 - Headley Court 1200-1300, Pirbright 1600, Deepcut area 1630, Frimley 1645, Sandhurst 1700-1730 (and staying in the Premier Inn, Sandhurst, if you fancy joining them for a drink after 1900). More successes for BAOC at British Championships!

In the Individual Championships, Julia Blomquist won the W20E class in 59:15 with a convincing lead of over 4 minutes. Other notable positions were Dane Blomquist 2nd in M16A, Richard Barrett, 2nd in M40L and Claire Godfrey, 3rd in W21S.

In the Relays, both the Mens's and the Women's team won their respective British Championship Short Relay class and the M50 team were second to SYO. The relay was held in a highly technical area of bell pits, small hills, gullies and depressions which demanded concentration and accurate navigation. Richard Barrett handed over in second place to Dane Blomquist who pulled clear and handed the lead to Mark Beverley; Mark held off the challenge of the chasing teams well.
Claire Godfrey had a solid start in the Women's short handing over to Julia Blomquist in 11th place; Julia had a superb run to take a substantial 6 minute lead and Woo Allen anchored the team successfully to take the win.
In the M50 class Axel Blomquist had a good run finishing in 6th place; Charles Bromley Gardner pulled the team up to 2nd with a winning second leg time. Colin Dickson ran hard to secure second place behind a strong South Yorkshire team.

JK Success! - Congratulations to our Ladies team of Becky Hoare, Julia Blomquist and Sarah Rollins (running order) who achieved the club's first JK Relay Womens Trophy win at the weekend. Their win was all the more impressive for beating the formidable SYO team with a clear margin of 64 seconds. Sarah Rollins had previously shown her good form at the event by already winning the Day 1 and Day 2 W21E events. Other notable results over the weekend were club secretary Charles Bromley Gardner, 2nd M50 Sprint; Julia Blomquist, 3rd W20E Sprint; Dave Rollins, 2nd M45L, Day 3; Richard Barrett, 1st M40 Sprint and 2nd M40L, Day 2. Full results can be viewed via the JK 2011 website and further reports and pictures are available on the British Orienteering website.

Marathon des Sables 2011 Results are now available here. Congratulations to Rob Shenton in finishing in a total time of 48H 13M 08S giving him a position of 453 out of 811 finishers. Rob's splits (click on his name) show he completed the 82Km longest stage in 15H 50M - and you all thought Sidbury was hard! Rob was running for Macmillan Cancer Support and you can show your admiration on his JustGiving page by helping him reach his target.

BAOC & SLOW organise Radio 2 Orienteering Sporting Challenge

The challenge between Chris Evans and his colleague Jonny Saunders for the Radio 2 Breakfast show took place in Battersea Park on Wednesday 8 December.

After some expert coaching by BAOC members WO1 Dave Rollins and Maj Lucy Giles, Chris completed the course in 5 minutes and 27 seconds with Jonny in 5 minutes and 48 seconds. Although both good times, they have someway to go to catch BAOC's Julia Blomquist who showed them how it should be done by completing the course in 3 minutes and 53 seconds

The video of the sporting challenge can be viewed on the BBC Radio 2 website.

Personal Detail Updates

LEAGUE RUNNERS: If you have been promoted or changed units, or you are new to the League, please email with your details before the first league event. For those new to the Leagues, I need your Service No., Rank & Initial, Surname, Unit, M/F, DOB and Emit card number (if you own one or have one permanently allocated).

BAOC Members: If you have recently changed address please email with your new details. British Orienteering membership renewals will start to be produced around 8 September so it is important they have your correct address. Where possible, a military address is preferred for club mailings.

Chris Branford's Photos from both days of the R Signals Championships are now available on Flickr. Choose either the slide show of all pictures or select from the Index page.

Refreshing webpages in your internet browser: Sometimes browsers will not show you the latest version of a web page because they believe the copy they have stored on your PC has not changed. Additionally, those in military sites also have to contend with Proxy Servers that also store local copies for the whole establishment and may not refresh their store with the latest page. We code our pages with an instruction to tell browsers and Proxy Servers not to store the pages but it doesn't always work. Since it's important to see the latest pages at the moment, if you can't see that this page has been updated when expected then the thing to do is to clear your browser's local cache on your PC. Navigate off the BAOC page then:
In Internet Explorer, go to menu item TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS and choose the DELETE or DELETE FILES button under Browsing History. Select the Temporary Internet Files option (but leave all other options deselected) and then press DELETE or OK. The file deletion may take several minutes.
In Firefox, go to menu item TOOLS > OPTIONS and select the Advanced Panel and then select the Network Tab. Click on the CLEAR NOW button. Finally click on OK to close the Options Window.
Reload the BAOC page after the deletion is completed.

UNIT TEAM CAPTAINS PLEASE TAKE NOTE AND PASS TO ALL TEAM MEMBERS

  1. The Organisers of the MLS event held on the 11 Nov 2010 at Deepcut received various complaints about Orienteers cutting through buildings during the 'In Barracks' part of the courses. Buildings are Out of Bounds at all event venues UNLESS otherwise stated. Competitors will be disqualified for cheating if caught. Units will refuse to allow Orienteering in camps if we (all MLS runners) do not stick to the rules.
  2. Team Captains must inform the Organising Unit in advance if they are going to turn up with a bus full of runners so adequate amounts of maps are prepared. Also advise the Emit operative so that adequate manpower and emit cards are available for your registration.
  3. Do not allow novice runners to enter a course they are not capable of completing. Runners should regularly finish in the top half of a course before they move up to the next course level. Novices should start on the Red course or Score course. The Light Green, Blue and Brown courses are NOT suitable for novices.
  4. Runners MUST download even if they withdraw from the event. All runners MUST receive a printout of their splits WITH THEIR NAME ON IT to ensure they have been correctly logged off the computer system. This is required for safety purposes so that the organisers can account for all competitors and confirm that no one is missing in the forest.

SSgt Colin Holcombe
Secretary, Military Orienteering League South

Tickets for Troops! - Thousands of tickets are being made available for top Premier League football matches, rugby games, cricket matches, boxing, horse-racing, athletics meetings, big music acts, tennis tournaments, snooker halls and West End theatres. To register go to the Tickets for Troops website.

MLS Controllers

All Event Controllers are asked to note the following:

Proximity of controls
Controls on different courses placed too close to one another can mislead runners who have navigated correctly to the control site. According to BOF Rules (and therefore MLS rules) controls shall not be sited within 30 metres of each other (15 metres for map scales 1:5000 or 1:4000). However, this applies only when the control features are distinctly different in the terrain as well as on the map. If similar features are used they should be placed no closer than 60 metres (30 metres for map scales 1:5000 or 1:4000).

Placing of controls
BOF rules (and therefore MLS rules) state that the control flag shall be hung at the feature indicated on the map in accordance with the control description. The flag shall be visible to competitors when they can see the described position. Please refrain from trying to make the course harder by hiding the flag; this is orienteering and not a treasure hunt! If you think the control is too easy go back to the planner and get it changed. This rule is particularly relevant when using pits as a control, the flag should not be in the bottom of the pit if it means you have to be standing next to the pit before you can see it.

Lt Col C Metcalfe
Chairman, Military Orienteering League South

USE OF SN MAPS

With effect from 01 Apr 09 all units requiring SN (Southern Navigators) owned maps must be booked through the AOA/BAOC Mapping Officer . The SN Mapping Officer has been directed not to issue maps direct to units/individuals. When the Planner is issued with the map and Guide to Use, any map adjustments they make must be logged after the event through the AOA/BAOC Mapping Officer. This will ensure that there is not overuse of areas, the accuracy of the map remains high and avoids clashes with other major planned events.

The new AOA Handbook is now available on the Documents page. Any comments or feedback would be appreciated by the AOA Secretary Capt Eddie Walsh.

CompassSport now have a photos page on their website which is indexed by event and searchable by club.

If you are intending to bring a large number of runners to compete on a league event course, please inform the organiser so they can produce sufficient maps for the event. This applies particularly to the shortest course which normally attracts the fewest entries and therefore may have just 30-40 maps printed.

Units that regularly bring a large number of runners to MLS events are encouraged to download and complete a Runners List Form (Excel spreadsheet) and use this for their weekly entries. Regular runners should be permanently entered into the spreadsheet which is optimised to speed up data entry at Registration. At busy times, you can leave the form with us SO THAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO WAIT IN THE REGISTRATION QUEUE. This saves time for yourself, the Registration team and your fellow competitors.

E-Results Lite Operating instructions are now available.  These instructions have been revised on 14 July 08 to clarify some of the details relating to course setup and results.

All units and individuals are reminded that full leg cover must be worn when orienteering. This is not just to protect the runner's legs but to prevent the transfer of infections through scratches at common points such as a control site. The wearing of shorts is not allowed.

4 Div Start & Finish banners are sponsored by Travel and Trek. Travel and Trek offers discounts to BAOC members on treks to Nepal. They also offer an adventure training planning service for units looking to go trekking in Nepal or India thus taking the pain out of planning such trips. Contact Terry Crosby through the Travel & Trek website for more details.

The membership structure for BAOC and British Orienteering changed on 1st January 2007 and with it British Orienteering senior members may now receive a discount of £2 at most civilian events. Membership is available at either 'National' level (receiving discounts at events throughout the country) or 'Local' level (receiving discounts only within the member's Regional Association area). Membership of BAOC gives many benefits which are enhanced with British Orienteering membership. If you orienteer regularly, in the army or at civilian events, you should join BAOC. Full details of the membership structure and a membership form are available on the Membership page.
