Congratulations to Maj Steed and his team at 3 RSME for organising an excellent event, I thought the Harris Relay was a good test for teams and an excellent practice for next week when perhaps the distances will be shorter but the navigation will be more testing. It was also a useful exercise for Jerry and myself on the EMIT desk as we had never run a Harris before and despite not getting the team lists and control codes until 0930hrs we managed to get all the registrations done by 1158hrs, that's obviously without RMAS who turned up late as usual. Nice to know they work these officer cadets hard these days.
I have updated the results to move a couple of teams into the Ad Hoc section. 7 AAC(V) had a civilian running for them so cannot count for a Divisional Champs. Civilians can count for the league, but not formal championships such as this. 13 AA Sp Regt RLC Ladies have also moved as they had to borrow a runner. Finally I have amended Maj MacDonald's time within 11 Sigs, he neglected to ensure his card started properley and as a result still had the previous event in his card, I was able to reconstruct his times as he started at a fixed time with 2 other runners in his team. However whilst it moves 11 Sigs 2 places up the major unit results overall, they still remain the 3rd 5 Div unit. If it had affected the 1st or 2nd placings I would not have made the amendment. The moral of the story here is that it is up to the individual to ensure their card starts at all times, if not sure then start again. Your time does not start until you lift the card off the start control so don't rush it. I have introduce the concept of a check start to try and stop such things happening, but we still average one an event.
If you purchase a version 3 card it has a display to confirm you have started and it also confirms you have punched at every control, that assumes of course that you look at the display every time you punch, believe it or not but some people still do not. Finally to back-up cards. These are not really there as a back-up as the controls do not fail electronically during an event, but what they do allow us to do is confirm whether you visited a certain control. It is a great argument settler. Provided you correctly place the bottom end of the card against the hub of the control it will register. However some still try to gain the odd sec by rushing the punch and occasionally miss. If you place the card fully in every time if will also record the pin prick, if not and you also fail to register by punching too quickly then you will be disqualified. The moral of this story is you have a delemnia, do you chance it and stick with the cheaper version 2 card at £22, or spalsh out and get a version 3 card at £38 and always be sure as you run around.
