Organisers Comments by Capt Richard Barrett AGC(SPS) 5 Div Sec:
We were lucky with the weather! The lack of infrastructure at the start/finish could have ruined an excellent event had the weather been wet and windy. However thanks to Capt Polly Parrott and his lads from Cdo Log Regt at Chivenor who ensured we had something to work with.
Late entries accounted for an extra 120 competitors that had to be accommodated, fed and provided with maps. Thankfully the map printing was completed very late in the day and did not concern Maj Allan Farrington (as opposed to myself and the controller who were experiencing mild panic), we even had extra maps for those units that might have entered on the day. The same could not be said for accommodation, when I arrived on Tuesday afternoon we were at least 120 bed spaces short (my second thank you is to the QM and his staff at Fremington who worked extra hard to accommodate us all), had all the units that entered turned up then we would have been three beds short. Apologies to those teams that had to be crammed into Building 41 (the 63 bed block) - a necessity in the end.
A late change to the Day 1 start for the Harris from the published final details confused the majority of team captains who opted to remain with their teams in the car park. It would have benefited the weaker teams had everyone congregated at the finish area prior to the start. I did not have long to worry as I was given a map and asked to check a control 15 mins before the Harris start and therefore assumed that I had been sacked as the organiser and given a new role! We (the controller, his assistant and I) located the misplaced control and repositioned it five minutes before the biggest Harris mass start that I have had the pleasure of witnessing.
I forgot the extra toilets, additional signs and loud hailer to name but a
few (sorry BOK but cakes were not on the list this time). However, I think we
came up with a successful championship, not polished by any means but it amounted
to good military training all the same. My thanks to Maj Allan Farrington (assistant
organiser), Lt Col Dave Smale (Relay start and prizes), Maj Duncan Parkinson
and Mr Andrew Hensman (Registration and stats), Mr Bill Vigar (controller) and
Mr John Ceeley our planner who worked throughout the two days supporting our
small team. Finally, many thanks to all the competitors who helped out on the
day and gave positive feedback and criticism in equal measures.
