Planner's Comments
Many thanks for all the comments that I received today - they were all very positive and we [1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment] were pleased that you enjoyed your visit to Windmill Hill and Mytchett North. At this time of year undergrowth is low and the area is at its best, only one person received severe nettle stings after a fall near controls 47 and 76. It won't be long before both the Bracken growth and the Stinging Nettles will make a number of features unusable as control sites.

I was keen to use the southern area of the map and although constrained by the road and the railway there are some excellent areas that are rarely used for orienteering - the short legs kept the majority of runners off the paths and fine navigation was tested early in the course. I was impressed by the accuracy of map reading that I witnessed as competitors approached the control in the old trench system on the A and B course (code 51), many of whom carefully followed the trench system from the western edge of the marsh.

We took a small risk with the A course by using the narrow Deepcut road bridge as a crossing; thankfully all went well with the assistance of two personnel to slow the approaching traffic. In hindsight I could perhaps have used the crossing for the Score Course but given the number of novice Battalion runners the decision to preclude this route choice was probably the correct one. Windmill Hill itself always throws up challenges no matter how many times you visit the area; on this occasion the extra motorbike trails caused confusion. A number of suggestions were made regarding the accuracy of the map in the area of control 58 (A course) and 39 (A & B Course) - I will pass these on to Southern Navigators with the other amendments that I have made to the map.

Many thanks to all members of 1 R Anglian who volunteered to assist; I can't mention everyone however the Organiser Tim Jones assisted by Chelsea Hall and their admin team were critical to the smooth running of the event. Thanks also to Hugh Drummond (mapping advisor), Dave Rollins (armchair controller and helper), Allan Farrington (map reproduction), WO2 Kev Main (score course controller), Jerry Newcombe (entries and results) and Charles Bromley-Gardner (control collecting).

Next year we hope to use Mytchett South; see you in the forest!
