The Battlesbury event was organised by Capt Andy Hotchkiss of 2 RGJ. John Parfitt of Sarum was the planner, having just mapped the area which includes the 3 hills and is located on the western edge of Salisbury Plain. They could not find a controller. This was therefore, the very first orienteering event on the area. Luckily, Registration was indoors and the start had a tent in which to cower, as the weather was appalling and it rained continually throughout the day. This made it very muddy underfoot and added to the difficulty of the event, especially for those without spikes and even more so for those poor "soles" in trainers. There were 3 courses 'A' had 220m climb (very, very slippy), 'B' had 160m climb (very slippy) and 'C' had 100m climb (just slippy). Some runners felt the mountainous terrain was rather excessive, however, they were within the BOF guidelines and this event was organised by the military and orienteering is considered excellent military training. That said it was a civilian planner. Despite the weather an excellent turnout of 174 runners, who were rewarded for their efforts with a hot drink and cake at the end and there were showers in the Gym.
